Course Summary

Practice Level: Intermediate

People with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) obsess about flaws in their appearance that may or may not be perceptible to others. People with BDD face unique challenges in their lives and social workers, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, and counselors are in a position to treat this obsessive-compulsive related disorder and relieve suffering. This learning material provides evidence-based conceptualizations about BDD along with essential information about diagnostic criteria and assessment, including differential diagnosis. Treatment is examined through the lens of cognitive and behavioral interventions, family therapy, and motivational interviewing. Advanced treatment strategies are also highlighted including perceptual retraining, attentional training, and acceptance and commitment approaches. Clinical challenges are explored with a focus on a client’s ongoing desire for cosmetic surgery. Case vignettes are also provided to enhance participant learning. Clinicians can use the information presented in this learning material to stay up to date on the best practices and approaches that support positive mental health outcomes.
