Arizona Substance Abuse Counselor CE Requirements and Courses Requirements
How many CEs does Arizona require?
Arizona Addiction Counselors are required to complete 30 hours of approved continuing education every 2 years.
Can I take my CEs from CE4Less?

What else do I need to know?
Arizona Addiction Counselors’ licenses must be renewed every two years from their initial issuance date.
Each renewal Arizona Addiction Counselors are required to complete:
- 3 hours in Ethics (See our courses in Ethics & Telemental Health and Ethics & Boundary Issues)
- 3 hours in Cultural Competency & Diversity
- 3 hours in Arizona Statutes/Regulations approved by the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners
Substance abuse technicians, associate substance abuse counselors, or independent substance abuse counselors must ensure that at least 20 of the 30 clock hours of continuing education are in the following categories (see our substance use offerings here):
- Pharmacology and psychopharmacology (our psychopharmacology courses can be found here)
- Addiction processes
- Models of substance use disorder and addiction treatment
- Relapse prevention
- Interdisciplinary approaches and teams in substance use disorder and addiction treatment
- Substance use disorder and addiction assessment and diagnostic criteria
- Appropriate use of substance use disorder and addiction treatment modalities
- Substance use disorder and addiction as it related to diverse populations
- Substance use disorder and addiction treatment and prevention
- Clinical application of current substance use disorder and addiction research
- Co-occurring disorders
