Tennessee Requirements for Social Work License Renewal
Tennessee social workers are required to complete approved continuing education every year depending on license type. LCSWs and LAPSWs must complete 15 hours per year (30 hours every two years). LMSWs must complete 12 hours per year (24 hours every two years). LBSWs must complete 9 hours per year (18 hours every two years). How many CEs does Tennessee require?
Tennessee’s social work continuing education requirements vary depending on the type of license held:
- LCSWs and LAPSWs are required to complete 15 hours per year (30 every 2 years)
- LMSWs are required to complete 12 hours per year (24 every 2 years)
- LBSWs are required to complete 9 hours per year (18 hours every 2 years)
Can I take my CEs from CE4Less?
Yes! Every licensed Tennessee social worker is required to complete continuing education during each calendar year and 2/3 rds of their credit hours may be multimedia courses (i.e., distance learning) taken with CE4Less. Each year licensees may take the following amounts of credit hours from CE4Less:
LBSW – 6 of their 9 required hours
LMSW – 8 of their 12 required hours
LAPSW or LCSW – 10 of their 15 required hours

What else do I need to know?
Tennessee social work licenses (LCSW, LAPSW, LMSW, and LBSW) must be renewed by every two years by the last day of the birth month of the licensee.
Each year, Tennessee social workers (regardless of license type) must complete:
- 3 hours in Professional Ethics (6 hours every 2 years) – CE4Less offers a number of ethics courses that may be used to satisfy this requirement, including Ethics & Boundary Issues and Ethics & Telemental Health
- 1 hour in the Rules & Regulations of the Tennessee Board of Social Worker Licensure (2 hours every 2 years)
Every 4 years, Tennessee social workers (regardless of license type) must complete 2 hours in board-approved Suicide Prevention Training. CE4Less offers a number of courses that address suicide prevention that may be useful to social workers.
Those licensees who hold more than one type of license must separately satisfy the continuing education requirements for each level of licensure.
