Illinois Psychologist CE Requirements
How many hours of CE credit does Illinois require for psychologists?
Illinois psychologists are required to complete 24 hours of approved continuing education every two years.
Can I take my CEs from CE4Less?
Yes! Illinois psychologists can complete up to 18 hours of the total CE requirement during their 2-year licensing period through distance-learning courses offered by a provider approved by the American Psychological Association (“APA”), provided such courses include an examination. CE4Less is approved by the APA to sponsor continuing education for psychologists, and all CE4Less courses include an examination.
A maximum of 18 CE credits per renewal period may be earned for completion of distance-learning courses (the rest must be taken in a “Live” setting).
What else do I need to know?
Illinois psychologists are required to complete
- 3 hours in Ethics (CE4Less offers other ethics courses, including Ethics & Telemental Health – see here for all available ethics courses) per renewal period.
- 1 hour in Implicit Bias training (CE4Less’ version of this course is under development) per renewal period.
- 1 hour in Sexual Harassment Prevention per renewal period
- Psychologists who provide care to patients aged 26 years or older are required to complete at least 1 hour in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of individuals with Alzheimer disease and other dementias per renewal period.
Psychologists who are considered mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect are required to complete training in the subject every 3 years. This training is only available through the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. Available here. For psychologists licensed in multiple states, CE4Less also offers a course in Child Abuse Assessment and Reporting.
- Beginning January 1, 2025 renewal will also require 1 hour in Cultural Competence (for a full listing of all available cultural competence courses, see here)
