How many CEs does New York require?
New York social workers (LMSW and LCSW) are required to complete 36 hours of approved continuing education every 3 years.
Can I take my CEs from CE4Less?
Unfortunately, in 2015, New York enacted meaningful restrictions on the education that is available to its social workers. New York now requires that each course taken for CE credit be individually approved. While CE4Less as a whole is approved to provide social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (“ASWB”), our courses have not been individually approved to provide credit in New York specifically.
CE4Less’ ASWB, APA, NBCC, and NAADAC approvals (see our Accreditations page for further detail) may allow you to receive CE credit for our courses if you are concurrently licensed in another state.
Please contact the New York State Board for Social Work at (518) 474-3817 for further information. And if you disagree with New York’s unique restrictions on education, let them know! We strive to deliver on our promise of quality, convenience, and affordability, and we would love to be able to serve New York social workers as we have served over 500,000 social workers, psychologists, counselors, MFTs, and addiction specialists in almost every state in the nation!
What else do I need to know?
New York social work licenses must be renewed every 3 years by December 31 of each year.
Each renewal cycle, New York social workers are required to complete:
- 3 hours in Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment
- 3 hours in Appropriate Professional Boundaries (NEW REQUIREMENT for registration periods beginning April 1, 2023)
CE4Less offers several courses that address these topics; however, they have not been approved individually by New York to offer credit for social workers.
