Maryland Requirements for Social Work License Renewal
Maryland LCSWs are required to complete 40 hours of approved continuing education every two years. Maryland LBSWs are required to complete 30 hours of approved continuing education every two years. How many hours of CE credit does Maryland require for social workers?
Maryland Social Workers are required to complete either 30 (LBSW) or 40 (LCSW licenses) hours of approved continuing education every 2 years.
Can I take my CEs from CE4Less?
Yes! Maryland Social Workers (LCSWs and LCSW-Cs) may earn up to 15 Category II hours through CE4Less.
Maryland LBSWs can complete up to 15 hours through Category II courses for each renewal.
Maryland (LCSWs and LBSW’s) must complete a minimum of 20 Category I hours by attending live, live online, or synchronous courses. Check out our live options here.

What else do I need to know?
Maryland Social Workers licenses must be renewed by October 31st every 2 years.
Each renewal period Maryland Social Workers must complete:
- 3 hours in Ethics – this can be Category I or Category II formats (See our courses in Ethics & Telemental Health and Ethics & Boundary Issues). Please note Maryland does not accept our course T034B for ethics credit, but it can be taken for general Category II credit.
- 3 Category I (available here) hours in any of the following:
- Cultural Humility
- Social Justice
- Racial Equity
- Implicit bias or Anti Racism
- 3 Category I or Category II hours in Supervision
